If it has been running for a month without any issues (no leaking) then I am pretty sure you have it right! When you want to disconnect it, as long as the valves are closed, there will not be any leaking. How do you know if you did it correctly? (the poster was wondering if they had connected it correctly as it had been running for about a month) Hopefully others will see your post and write what they do, everyone has their own way! Good luck! And it will get better with practice, the first times are the hardest!

I tried to write it as simple as possible but it is still complex and easier to show than to write! I think the Eheim manual recommends reconnecting all the valves first and then ‘priming’ it (please refer to the manual) but I have never tried that method so I can’t comment on it. I know this was long and complex, please post back if you have questions or need clarifications or if I missed a step. I usually go 6 mths -1 year between cleaning but this depends on many factors( tank, bioload, plants, etc). In general, I tend to follow the Phyllis Ringstand method (you can do a search on internet and the article should come up, if you find it print it as it is a keeper!) but I always use tank or dechlorinated water (I just add water conditioner to a bucket of water) to rinse out the canister or the media depending on what needs to be done. Sometimes there is still air inside, I gently rock the canister from side to side to help expel the air until I do not hear any noise (air causes noise in the filter if present). Once the water has entered and completely filled the filter (it has come back out through the outtake valve at the top), you can close both intake valves, reconnect both outtake valves and reopen the outtake valves first and then the intake valves. You will hear the air gushing out and the water coming in so be ready because when all the air is out, water will come out of the outtake valve at the top, hence why you need the bucket to catch the water.

I use a turkey baster inserted in the outtake valve to start the suction. This will allow the tank water to flow back into the filter, pushing all the air out. Very slowly, open the intake valve on the filter first, followed by the one on the tube on the tank after. Now point the outtake valve on the filter into this bucket. So, reconnect the intake valves together first, but not the outtake valves yet.

Now, when reconnecting, you have to remember that the canister is now full of air and turning it on with air inside is no good as it was not designed for operation with air. I put my bioballs in a mesh bag to facilitate cleaning, that way they are separate from the mechanical filter. After checking everything (including the impeller, refer to the instructions), wet the O-ring with tank water, put the media in the proper order, clip the top properly. If you need to rinse the media, do so in tank or water conditioner treated water so as to not kill your biofilter. You can also open the top of the filter once it has emptied by undoing the clips and, over another container or in the sink to catch the water, pour this water into the filter, with the intake (bottom) valve open to rewash it again. This will make air come into your filter, pushing the water out the reverse way along with some sludge, hence the ‘backwash’. Then, slowly open the output valve (again the one connected to the filter at the top, not the one ‘connected’ to the tank). Point the intake valve attached to the filter (bottom one connected to the filter, not the one ‘connected’ to the tank) into the container. Having a second pair of hands helps when trying to hold the tubes and the buckets to catch water! If possible, have someone with you to help you clean it the first times. These valves, when closed, allow you to safely move the canister without letting the tank water go anywhere. There are 2 valves for the intake (bottom of the canister, tank water going into the filter) and 2 for the output (top of the canister, filtered water going back into the tank).

The double tap valves stop the flow of water. If this is your first cleaning, a simple ‘backwash’ may suffice.

The original question was how to unhook an Eheim 2215 canister to clean it.įirst of all, do you still have the instruction booklet? I will describe how I clean mine, but do refer to the booklet in case I forgot something.īefore you get started, have a few large buckets handy. If upon reading this you have other suggestions or do things differently, please share I am always looking for other ways to do things! We sometimes get stuck in our habits and overlook that there may be a better way I am guilty of that! :)

I am no expert but just wanted to share what I do to maintain my filters. Hello! A response I had given was chosen as a blog.
